How to Add Additional Squarespace Properties to Google Search Console
If you know me, you know I’ve written a bunch of posts about getting Squarespace blog posts indexed, like this one entitled Get Your Squarespace Blog Posts Indexed by Google, so I’m accustomed to using Google Search Console, albeit to a very small degree of what it’s capable of.
But it’s also important to know that when you launch a Squarespace website, you must also submit a sitemap to Google Search Console to get the website crawled and indexed.
As a web designer, I want to be sure that my client’s new websites are being indexed by Google, whether they have a blog or not, and while I could provide them with instruction on how to do it themselves, submitting their sitemap for them is the least I can do after they’ve just paid me all kinds of money so that they don’t have to do things like this themselves.
Plus it’s just really easy and there are other benefits to me for adding their property to my GSC account.
In this blog post, I’m going to show you how easy it is to add additional properties to your own Google Search Console account and provide some examples as to why you may want to do this for your clients.
How to Add a Squarespace Property to Google Search Console
Log into your Google Search Console account and the Squarespace website you want to add to your property.
In your browser, open up the live Squarespace website you want to add to your dashboard and copy the URL out of the browser.
Come back over to your GSC account and select from the dropdown on the left ‘+ Add property.’
You’ll see two options. You want the option that says ‘URL Prefix.’
Paste the property URL you just copied into this box.
Scroll down to where it says HTML tag—add meta tag to your site’s homepage.
Select the drop-down arrow here and select ‘Copy.’
Now come back over to the back end of the website to inject that code into the header of the website.
Select Website > Website tools > Code injection.
Click inside the Header box (the first one), paste the code, and ‘Save.’
Come back over to Google Search Console and select ‘Verify.’ Make sure you select the correct one.
Why You May Want to Add Your Client’s Property to Your Google Search Console Dashboard
First of all, it’s just a nice thing to do for your clients. They often don’t want to be bothered to do this themselves and it would take more effort to show them how to do this than it is to just do it yourself.
I do make them video tutorials showing them how to add their property to their own GSC Account, but I’m not sure they are actually doing this.
Some other reasons to add their properties to your Dashboard are:
To track the progress of the website and collect the data for yourself
To use the data to promote more services to said client, ie, if they’re NOT getting the amount of traffic they could be getting if they made some changes
If you are providing blogging services you can request indexing on behalf of your client
If you’re thinking of offering continued support that includes Google reporting
